What type of tree, trunk looks marker caps stacked together?

I realize it's a bit of a weird description, but the trunk is about the width of a fat crayola marker, and it is in small sections about an inch high that really does look like marker caps all stacked up. The trunk is very smooth exept there is always a small ridge between each section. This thing is a houseplant,vbut. It pretty much touches the ceiling. The leaves are huge, about 1-2 feet long and 3 inches wide. Any idea what type of tree this is?
